  About Irondale Community School.

Irondale

Irondale Community School was established in 1886. In March 2011, we moved into our present building which includes two new classroom buildings, cafeteria, amphitheater, and an air-conditioned gymnasium. We serve over 400 students in grades 3 through 5. Our students come from Grantswood Community School and then go on to attend Irondale Middle School or the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate Middle School and then to Shades Valley High School or to the Jefferson County International Baccalaureate School.

All of our teachers are highly-qualified. Numerous teachers hold Master’s Degrees. We are an AMSTI (Alabama Math, Science & Technology Initiative) and an ARI (Alabama Reading Initiative) site.

Our media center is equipped with over 6,000 books. We also have two 28-30 technology labs, a 12-station media center lab as well as a 30-station mobile computer center. Our building is fully handicapped accessible. We are a Title I School; we receive Federal funding to ensure each student’s needs are met.

Our students are able to experience art, music, and physical education. In addition, students visit our extensive media center as well as participate in many other programs. Every staff member at ICS cares about our students!

Our students also experience self-selected activity clubs each month. Businesses and community organizations assist our teachers with the clubs. Among the many organizations that help our students are Home Depot, Publix, Winn-Dixie, Girls' Inc!, Greater Birmingham Humane Society, Birmingham Museum of Art, Southern Museum of Flight, Jefferson County/Irondale Public Library, North Star Karate, Irondale Police Department, Alabama 4-H, Episcopal Place, Fair Haven, and St. Martin’s in the Pines. We are so grateful for the wonderful partnerships with these groups! In addition, students have the opportunity to join Step Club, Science Club, ICS/CSI Detectives Club, Dance Club, Computer Coding Club,  Chess Club, Track/Field Club, or Pottery Club.

Irondale Community School is proud member of the Jefferson County School System, which is located in the greater metropolitan area of Birmingham is Alabama’s second largest school district.  With 52 schools, 2,564 teachers, and 35,843 students, the system offers a multitude of academic, career technical, and extracurricular opportunities for students.

Our expectations are high for both academics and behavior at ICS.
